APC Moves To Stop Pdp’s Plot For Senate President

Image result for nigeria senate president PDP orders senators to vote one candidate

A few days to the convening of the eighth National Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched a plot to take the Senate presidency from the All Progressives Congress (APC) which controls the majority of senators.

But the APC is not taking chances. It has summoned a meeting of its lawmakers to forge a united front.

The plot, if it succeeds, may lead to the return of outgoing Senate President David Mark and his deputy Ike Ekweremadu to their positions.

The PDP has directed its 49 senators to vote for one candidate when the eighth Senate convenes.

The APC is left with 59 Senators following the death of reelected Borno Senator Ahmed Zanna.

Although APC ought to produce the next President of the Senate, with its simple majority, the party has not reached a consensus.

Senate Committee on Public Accounts Chairman Ahmed Lawan and Ecology Committee Chairman Bukola Saraki are locked in a battle of popularity for the job.

The Nation learnt that PDP leaders at the party’s retreat in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, for its senators-elect and members of the House of Representatives-elect mooted the idea of the opposition retaining the senate presidency.

It was gathered that the PDP leaders agreed that with block votes by its 49 senators, the party could win the must coveted seat with a simple majority.

The permutation of the PDP is that APC might be unable to birdge the gap between Lawan and Saraki.

A highly-placed source said: “The PDP leaders held a secret meeting in Port Harcourt on Monday night to finetune the plot.

“The development may see Mark and Ekweremadu joining the race in a ‘tactical moment’ if the APC remains divided.

“The PDP is seeking to retain the office because there is no rule which says either the majority party or the opposition should produce the president of the Senate.”

The source cited Section 50 (1) of the 1999 Constitution to back the lacuna.

The section says: “There shall be a President and a Deputy President of the Senate who shall be elected by the members of that House from among themselves…”

Apparently sensing the danger in going into the Senate presidency race divided, the APC leadership has called a meeting of its senators and Representatives for tomorrow in Abuja.

A statement by National Publicity Secretary, Lai Mohammed inviting the lawmakers to the meeting did not reveal the agenda. It only urged them to be punctual at the International Conference Centre venue.

The meetings with the senators and the Reps will hold separately.

It was, however, learnt that the meetings might be used to galvanise a consensus.

As for the PDP, it was learnt that some of its governors have offered to bankroll the project to “pay back APC in its own coin for controlling the Seventh House of Representatives even when President Goodluck Jonathan was still in charge”.

Another source added: “We also want to spring a surprise and prove that anything is possible in politics. Once Mark and Ekweremadu are back in the saddle, APC will need at least the support of 72 or 73 members to remove them.

“If you look at Section 50 (2) (c), the votes of not less than two-thirds majority of the Senate are required to remove the President of the Senate and deputy.”

“The PDP is trying to capitalise on internal wrangling within APC to realise its agenda.”

A third source however spoke of Plan B by some PDP leaders bordering on block votes.

The source added: “What the Port Harcourt retreat has so far achieved is the need for PDP senators-elect to vote enbloc based on prevailing circumstances in the Senate.

“The horse-trading will determine the direction of PDP bloc votes although the opposition is waiting in the wing for any slip.”

In his speech at the retreat in Port Harcourt, the outgoing President of the Senate, Chief David Mark, pleaded with PDP members-elect in the National Assembly to be united.

Mark said: “We must subject our individual interest to our group interest. In the election of principal officers of National Assembly, we must vote in one accord. We must know that united we stand, divided we fall.

“We must take our destinies in our hands. We must be ready to provide credible, vibrant, determined and focused opposition to the party in power in a manner that would guarantee development and good governance.

“In doing so, we must maintain a strong synergy between our members in the National Assembly and the National Working Committee. The PDP is still a brand all Nigerians know. We just need to reinvent the wheels and move forward.”

The New Electricity Tariffs From July 2015

Image result for nigeria electricityThe Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has issued new electricity tariffs that became effective for commercial and industrial consumers from 1 April 2015 and that would become effective for residential consumers from 1 July 2015. The new tariffs are in the Multi-Year Tariff Order, MYTO, 2.1 for the period 1 April 2015 to December 2018 and they replace the tariffs in MYTO 2 for the period 1 June 2012 to 31 May 2017.
The charges are in two parts, there is a fixed monthly charge and there is a charge for electricity consumption, the energy charge, which is measured in kiloWatt-hour, kWh. We give below the charges for residential consumers using single phase or three phase meters, category R2. Charges are given for four electricity distribution companies, DISCOs, namely Benin DISCO, Ibadan DISCO, Ikeja DISCO and Eko DISCO.

For Benin DISCO, the fixed monthly charge for residential R2 category is N750 in 2015, N900 in 2016, N1080 in 2017 and N1296 in 2018. The energy charge will rise from N12.54 per kWh to N18.46 per kWh, an increase of 47 per cent, on 1 July 2015. The energy charge will be N17.02 per kWh in 2016, N18.23 per kWh in 2017 and N15.23 per kWh in 2018. For Ibadan DISCO, the fixed monthly charge for residential R2 category is N625 in 2015, N750 in 2016, N900 in 2017 and N1,080 in 2018.

The energy charge will rise from N14.23 per kWh to N18.00 per kWh, an increase of 26 per cent, on 1 July 2015. The energy charge will be N17.36 per kWh in 2016, N19.60 per kWh in 2017 and N17.93 per kWh in 2018.

For Ikeja DISCO, the fixed monthly charge for residential R2 category is N750 in 2015, N900 in 2016, N1,080 in 2017 and N1,296 in 2018. The energy charge will rise from N13.61 kWh to N14.96 per kWh on 1 July 2015. The energy charge will be N14.50 per kWh in 2016, N13.88 per kWh in 2017 and N12.85 per kWh in 2018. For Eko DISCO, the fixed monthly charge for residential R2 category is N750 in 2015, N900 in 2016, N1,080 in 2017 and N1,296 in 2018.

The energy charge will rise from N12.87 per kWh to N18.75 per kWh, an increase of 45 per cent, on 1 July 2015. The energy charge will be N18.01 per kWh in 2016, N19.39 per kWh in 2017 and N16.42 per kWh in 2018. The new tariff increases reflect the repayments of loans granted to all the DISCOS by the Central Bank of Nigeria. The loans amount to N30.72 billion for Benin DISCO, N27.16 billion for Ibadan DISCO, N11.70 billion for Ikeja DISCO and N6.86 billion for Eko DISCO.

Interest charged on the loans is 11 per cent and repayments are to be made between 2016 and 2014. There are bound to be strong protests when these increases are implemented and this may be one of the reasons why NERC has finally accepted that the issuance of estimated bills by DISCOs must be swiftly brought to an end.

NERC has recently acknowledged that the DISCOs are not doing enough to provide meters for their unmetered customers. NERC indicated that although the Credited Advanced Payment for Meter Implementation, CAPMI, was introduced such that customers can provide DISCOs with funds for the acquisition of meters, the DISCOs have not shown enough commitment to providing their customers with meters.

NERC therefore proposes to issue an order stipulating the maximum amount any unmetered customer would pay to the DISCO that provides him/her electricity services. I believe that an estimated bill should not exceed 200kWh in a month and if the DISCO believes the customer uses more than 200kWh per month, the DISCO should as a priority provide the customer with a meter.

Call Your Wife To Order, Group Warns Jonathan

A group, Concerned Bayelsa Elders, has warned former President Goodluck Jonathan to call his wife, Patience, to order or risk political crisis in Bayelsa State.

The leader of the group, Ebeletimi Wilson, said this while addressing journalists in Lagos, according to a statement on Tuesday.

Wilson said Jonathan’s wife was still scheming to ensure that the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, does not emerge governor next year.

He said now that Jonathan has relocated to Bayelsa State, his wife is attempting to use her supporters in the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria to frustrate the governor.

He said if Jonathan did not handle the situation well, he could lose Dickson’s loyalty just as former governors Rotimi Amaechi and Timipre Sylva abandoned him.

Wilson said, “What exactly does Dame Patience Jonathan want? Dickson has proved to be a performing governor as he has within three years transformed the state in the areas of infrastructural development and security. This initiative has changed the fortunes of the state.

“Jonathan should be able to call his people to order because we know that his inability to call his people to order resulted in the eventual face off with Timipre Sylva and Rotimi Amaechi.

“Our appeal is that, as the leader of the state, Jonathan should encourage Dickson for succeeding in keeping the Peoples Democratic Party united in the state.”

Wilson said if Jonathan did not speak up then it would be assumed that he and his wife are plotting to ensure that a former commissioner, Waipamo-Owei Dudafa, emerges the next governor of the state.

He alleged that Patience’s clique and preferred candidate were the ones frustrating Dickson’s administration.

He said, “Why should ex-President Jonathan keep mum while his wife fuels crisis in the state just because she is not getting her way? It is very disappointing. Her aim is to turn Bayelsa into a crisis-ridden state like what she encouraged in Rivers State, but thank God Dickson has been tactful.

“It is ironical that she has in the last three years been the main opposition in Bayelsa State, intimidating the people and even security operatives.”

Shekau Missing As Boko Haram Releases New Video

BREAKING: Shekau Missing As Boko Haram Release New Video

The Islamist terrorist group Boko Haram released a video online on Tuesday, rejecting the claims of the Nigerian military that it has been routed by a four-nation offensive, which doesn’t show Abubakar Shekau the group’s leader.

Abubakar Shekau

The speaker in the 10-minute message which was posted on the video-sharing site YouTube said “Most of our territory is still under our control”. He called Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, who have been battling the Islamists, “the lying coalition partners”.

The video bears the new logo “Islamic State in West Africa” and follows the Nigerian militants’ pledge of allegiance in an audio message in March to the IS group, that has overrun large parts of Syria and Iraq.

Red Cross says 13 killed in Maiduguri bomb. Eyewitnesses say more dead. New video tagged IS in West Africa does not feature Abubakar Shekau. — will ross (@willintune) June 2, 2015

The message is the first video released by the terrorist group since February, when Shekau vowed to disrupt Nigeria’s elections.

Shekau has featured prominently in most of the group’s videos over the last three years and his absence in the latest message will likely stir further debate on his whereabouts or possible death.

Nigeria’s military has claimed to have killed Shekau only for him to pop up on another video.

The speaker in the new message appears in front of two pick-up trucks, with four other gunmen visible in the background.

He speaks in the Hausa language that is dominant in northern Nigeria with Arabic and English subtitles.

An AK-47 rifle rests on his chest as he seeks to rebuke the claims of successes made in recent weeks by the military.

“The armies claim through the media that they captured our towns and that they assaulted Sambisa (forest) and defeated us,” he said, referring to the bushland area in Nigeria’s northeast Borno state that has been an Islamist stronghold.

“I swear by Allah that I am talking right now from Sambisa… Here in Sambisa you can travel more than four to five hours under the black flag of Islam by car or by motorbike.”

The video further shows gruesome violence, including executions of apparent civilians and one man in a Nigeria police uniform, who are shot at close range.

It was reported that on March 7, 2015 the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, in an audio message pledged allegiance to the richest and, probably, most powerful terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS).

The terrorist group recently stormed two Yobe towns, burning down a police station and several government buildings.

Senators, Reps To Leave With 109 Jeeps, 360 Exotic Cars

Senators and members of the House of Representatives will go home with the operational vehicles of the National Assembly currently in their possession as the 7th Assembly winds down on Friday.

Each of the 109 senators has a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, commonly referred to as ‘jeep’, assigned to them for “operational” purposes like carrying out committee and oversight duties.

The story is the same at the House, where each member has a 2011 model Toyota Camry attached to them for operational duties.

Apart from the operational vehicles, principal officers, including the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House, have additional vehicles assigned to them.

The Prado jeeps and Camry are properties of the National Assembly that should have ordinarily been left behind by the departing legislators.

But, The PUNCH gathered on Tuesday that, with the understanding of the management of the legislature, the vehicles have been valued, taking note of the years of depreciation, to allow lawmakers who wish to go home with them to do so by paying 30 per cent of the purchase price.

The money is to be deducted from the severance package of the senators and the House members.

Findings showed that in line with the arrangement, the Prado jeeps, valued at the market price of about N9m, would be given away to senators for around N2.7m.

In the same vein, members of the House will each part with about N1.9m to go home with the Camry, valued at N6.5m.

An official of the National Assembly management, who confirmed the “deal” to The PUNCH in Abuja on Tuesday, said, “The cars have been used for four years, so this valuation has taken cognisance of the years of depreciation.

“The vehicles are not taken away free of charge and as a matter of fact, it is optional. A lawmaker who does not want to go with the vehicle will submit it to the National Assembly and it will be so documented.

“The deduction will be done from their severance package at source, which makes it easier.

“It is a practice that has been on over the years.”

Investigations also showed that, aside the operational vehicles, each of the senators, on resumption in 2011, was given 300 per cent of their total basic salaries as car loans and 300 per cent as housing allowance. About 250 per cent was advanced to them as furniture allowance.

Each of the senators, according to investigations, is receiving N1.8m basic salary monthly while the Senate President’s basic salary per month, is N2m.

One of our correspondents learnt that the car loan, which was about N6.5m per senator and N7m for the senate president, was used to buy a brand new Toyota Camry car each.

The amount, according to a senior member of staff of the National Assembly, was deducted from the basic salaries of the senators within two years.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the press, said the arrangement was a departure from the past practice whereby some senators went away with their operational vehicles as parting gifts.

He said, “The loans were obtained for the lawmakers through the banks where their salary accounts are domiciled, hence the bankers usually deduct certain percentage agreed upon from their monthly payments to service the car, housing and furniture loans.”

Attempts to get an official reaction from the Deputy Director of Information at the National Assembly, Mr. Ishaku Dibal, were unsuccessful as calls put through to his mobile telephone did not connect.

However, the Deputy House Majority Leader, Leo Ogor, confirmed that the operational vehicles would be taken away “but certainly not for free.”

Ogor explained that the “normal procedure” was that the vehicles would be evaluated and an agreed sum deducted from the severance package of departing legislators.

“I don’t know what the amount will be; but I know that the cars are not for free. The management of the National Assembly will work it out and communicate to members accordingly”, he stated.

Investigations further revealed that members of the House were also offered the choice of taking home the plasma TV sets in their offices on the condition that they would pay 50 per cent of the purchase price.

The PUNCH learnt that a 40-inch TV set for example, was supplied for a contract sum of N600,000 in 2011. This means a member planning to take it home will pay N300,000 to the management of the legislature.

Another House official however disclosed to The PUNCH that most members of the House turned down the Tv set offer.

“They agreed to take the vehicles but almost all of them rejected the offer of the Tv sets on the grounds that they were too expensive.”

Open Heavens 3 June 2015: Wednesday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – The True Worshippers

Topic: The True Worshippers [Wednesday June 3, 2015]

Memorise: God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. - John 4:24

Read: John 4:21-24 (KJV)

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 7:1-8:11, Luke 2:22-40

MESSAGE:

It is not all acts of worship that God accepts, because not all worshippers are true worshippers. The truth was revealed by Jesus in His conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well. He also revealed some other great truths about worship that we should pay close attention to if we want our worship to be acceptable to God. The first of these is that any “God” that is limited or restricted to particular place is false and not worthy of worship. Worship directed towards such contraptions of men is counterfeit worship.

The worship of the true God does not involve going to a junction where three roads meet to put food items for God to come and eat. Paul came across worshippers of such gods at Mars’ Hill in Athens (Acts 17:22-31). The true God is described thus by the Psalmist in Psalm 8:1:

“O Lord our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! Who hast set thy glory above the heavens.”

Another truth about worship which Jesus revealed is that any god that does not have a fatherly relationship with his worshippers is not worthy of our worship. Anyone worshipping such gods is not a true worshipper. This is why Jesus came to make us children of His Father.

Also, when He was teaching His disciples how to pray, He described the true God as “Father” (Luke 11:2). Furthermore, Jesus revealed that our worship of God is not true worship if we do not know the God we are worshipping. This is the reason why Paul tried to introduce the Athenians to the God they were ignorantly worshipping(Acts 17:23). He tried to teach them that they were wrong to think that the Godhead could be represented by gold, silver or stone graven by art and man’s devices (Acts 17:29). No worshipper should ignorantly think that a Holy God will accept worship from a life laden with the sin of falsehood, pretence and all manner of immorality and wickedness.

True worship involves worshipping the true God in spirit and in truth, we must worship God in spirit because God is a Spirit, and only through the spirit can we relate meaningfully with His Spirit. To worship God in Sprit means to do what He bids you to do with a spiritual mind of faith. These are things the Holy Spirit of God would ask us to do that viewed with a carnal mind, are difficult to understand. For example, when God asked Noah to build a big ship on dry ground, to men of his generation, this was not a sensible thing to do. That a person should stick to one spouse “for better, for worse” may not sound reasonable, but that is what the word of God says. A true worshipper of God will not tell lies even if there is no risk of being found out. To a true worshipper, being truthful is not about man but about God who is all-knowing.

Prayer Point: Father, grant me grace to live a life of acceptable worship through Your Spirit in Jesus’ Name

Open Heavens 2 June 2015: Tuesday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – Don't Close Your Mouth II

Topic: Don't Close Your Mouth II [Tuesday June 2, 2015]

Memorise: Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. - John 15:16

Read: Matthew 28:18-20 (KJV)

18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world Amen.

Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 5-6, Luke 2: 1-21

MESSAGE:

In addition to opening our mouth in prayer, opening our mouth as witnesses of Jesus is another obligation we must perform. Evangelistic outreach is for all children of God; not for God's ministers alone. We must all bear fruit of souls into God's Kingdom as commanded by our Lord in today's memory verse. To back us up in this obligation, our Lord Jesus Christ assures us that all power in heaven and on earth belongs to Him. It is therefore a settled matter that no power on earth or in the spiritual world can stop us from carrying out His instructions. We are therefore inexcusable if we fail to win souls. He instructed us to go and teach all nations, baptising them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. The Great Commission therefore involves teaching. Let us pause and think about what this assignment of teaching means.

To teach is to expound truths that will bring about change in the taught. We are faced with a two-pronged problem in the area of fulfilling this assignment today. One aspect of this problem is that the teacher who is supposed to expound the truth is often afraid of what the reaction of the student would be to a demand for change; hence, he shuts his mouth. But the Bible in 2 Timothy 4:2 says:

"Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine."

The other aspect of this problem is that the people to be taught are not comfortable with the cry for "change". They do not want to be "intimidated" by the "dos and don'ts" of their new found faith in Christ. Such people are deceiving themselves because the Bible does not say we are called into lawlessness. As a matter of fact and whether we believe it or not, a yoke of "learning and change" is attached to our calling into the faith. Jesus in Matthew 11:29a said:

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;"

It is our duty as children of God to open our mouths wide to this perverted generation and teach them the counsel of God without fear or favour. I was in a church sometime last year and I heard a sister teaching on tithes. In order to make people accept the doctrine of tithing, she said they could start by giving 5% of their income and gradually increase it! What an erroneous teaching! We must not hold back the truth from those we are sent to. This is the only way our fruit can endure, and then our prayers will be answered.

Action Point: Determine to properly disciple your converts through sound teaching of the Bible from today.

PDP Raises Alarm Over Fresh Plot To Remove Fayose; Begs Buhari To Intervene

The Peoples Democratic Party has raised the alarm over what it called an illegal plot by some members of the ruling All Progressives Congress, to oust Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose.
Mr. Fayose, who has been having a running battle with the members of the State House of Assembly, had obtained a court order restricting the members from proceeding with the impeachment process.

The Acting Chairman of the PDP, Uche Secondus, while addressing a retreat of elected lawmakers under the party holding in Port Harcourt this morning, said the Ekiti lawmakers “are presently camped at a location in Osun in preparation to be moved to Ekiti”.

Mr. Secondus said the party considered it illegal and a test of its patience if the Ekiti lawmakers and their backers will be allowed to make real their intentions.
“We call on President Buhari to intervene. As a party, we will not sit down and watch democracy being derailed. We have been working on deepening democracy for the past 16 years. We must continue to depend it and I call on you to continue to depend democracy.”

Mr. Secondus, in a reaction to brickbats that followed the party’s abysmal performance in the last round of elections, called on members of the party to bring an end to the blame game and face the task of rebuilding the party.

He said the PDP plans to rev up its research and communication units to reposition itself as a formidable opposition party.

Earlier, the President of the Senate, David Mark, said as a minority party, the PDP is prepared to provide “credible, focused and vibrant opposition” at the National Assembly.
He said with unity among party members and synergy between leadership of the party and elected persons under the party, the PDP would be stronger and capable of giving the ruling APC a tough fight.

“We will very credible in our opposition. We will prepare ourselves so that we will have accountability and good governance”.

Thugs Invade Ekiti Assembly Vicinity

There is tension in some parts of Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, Monday morning following reports of plan by the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers to hold a sitting inside the House of Assembly complex.

At the time of filing this report at about 11.15am, suspected thugs have been mobilized to the vicinity of the Assembly complex where they are “waiting” for the lawmakers.

A visit by our reporter to some parts of the city including the House of Assembly area and adjoining streets showed the thugs milling around, standing in groups in some locations.

Although the thugs were not allowed near the House of Assembly complex by armed policemen keeping vigil in the area, the hoodlums were observing events from safe distance.

Some of the places where the thugs can be found include an uncompleted petrol station at Awedele Road junction, an uncompleted block of the State Secretariat complex at the back of the Assembly complex, under a tree beside Ekiti Parapo Square and the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat near NTA Ado Ekiti.

Riot policemen deployed to the area were conducting stop-and-and-search operation and barricaded some portions of NTA Road, State Secretariat Road and the road leading to the Judges’ Quarters.

Vehicles belonging to drivers’ unions were parked in the vicinity of the Government House with the unions’ members standing by.

Bonfires were lit in places like Irona/Isato junction, Ijigbo Roundabout and Omisanjana junction.

Commercial and social activities were going on at press time.

Memorise: Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not. - James 4:2

Read: Daniel 9:1-19 (KJV)

1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;

2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;

5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:

6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.

7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.

8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.

9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;

10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.

12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.

13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.

14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.

15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.

17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake.

18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.

19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.

Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 3-4, Luke 1:57-80

MESSAGE:

Our Bible reading shows Daniel, a great man of prayer, interceding for his nation, Israel. In his prayer, he asked God to remember His promise to restore the nation Israel. He was determined to seek the face of God for mercy, through prayers and supplications with fasting.

He mourned for the despicable condition of the Jews who were scattered all over the world and for the ruins of Jerusalem. There are great lessons of life we can profit from when we ponder on this example of Daniel.

One of these lessons is from this statement: 'I Daniel understood by books' (Daniel 9:2). It was Daniel's discovery and understanding of what the Lord has said through Prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 29:10, concerning the time of His salvation to restore Israel as a nation that motivated him to intercede for his people. Recognise the fact that in this period, there were no Bible collating all the writings of the prophets in one volume. The writings of the prophets were on different scrolls spread across various locations. Therefore, it must have been a lot of hard work for Daniel to search for the relevant scrolls of the prophets, and then read through them to know what God has said about the situation he was bothered about. Reading, studying and meditating on God's word is hard work, but the extent to which you know the bible is the extent to which you will know the mind of God concerning you. When you know the mind of God concerning a situation, it will build your confidence as you approach your Heavenly Father in prayer.

Our Lord Jesus Christ assured us of answers to our prayer in Mathew 7:8. He followed up this assurance by asking this question in Mathew 7:9:

'Or what man is there of you, whom if his son asked bread, will give him a stone"

In answer to our Lord's question, a father indeed would not do that. How much more our Heavenly Father who is more benevolent than our earthly father (Mathew 7:1)'I therefore encourage you to study to know the mind of God, so as to pray aright at all times. This Alone can guarantee express answers to your needs. It will not be good for you to engage in an exercise in futility. Pray according to God's mind in His holy word and you will be happy you did. Do not keep your mouth shut and suffer in silence.

Prayer Point: Father, help the leaders of my country to be alive to their responsibilities s in Jesus' Name.

ADELANI MAKINDE, a 32 year old businessman filed for divorce just hours after his expensive wedding. ADELANI discovered that his bride, KEMI had been wearing what is known as a butt pad to augment the size of her rear.

ADELANI told an Ikeja high court that his wife’s yansh is as flat as an ironing board. “I discovered that on our wedding night. I prefer a woman whose rear is big.”

55 year old EMMANUEL ASALA told Ikare Akoko Customary Court (Ondo) to dissolve his marriage to BUSAYO because she did not bring kitchen utensils from her father’s house. “How will a woman get married without a grinding stone, tablespoons, mortar, pestle, deep freezer and even serving plates?

“She did not bring any of these to my house. I don’t think I can continue with the marriage.” These were the words Emmanuel uttered in court. He even prayed the court should order Busayo to return all the things he listed because he bought them with his money.

ADETIRE ADEBOLA, a 40 year old carpenter told an Ikeja high court (Lagos) to dissolve his marriage of five years because his in-law often intervened when he is beating his wife.

“She is a stubborn woman. They don’t want me to teach her a lesson. I don’t like it when her people stop me from beating her. It is either they take their daughter or allow me put sense into her head”, was what ADEBOLA told the court during the proceeding.

SOJI IBRAHIM, a 35 year old trader ended his marriage of two months to RASHIDAT because she has small boobs.” It was her boobs that attracted her to me. I met her when she came to buy pepper from me. I couldn’t take my eyes off her big boobs.”

Ibrahim was shocked to discover his wife had been using artificial boobs after getting married to her. “Her boobs are small as Agbalumo (cherry)”, he said. “I detest those small size boobs. It is better to end the marriage.”

EJEMBI TONY and RACHAEL ended their five year marriage because of shoe odour. RACHAEL filed for divorce at an Igando Grade II court (Lagos) because her husband’s shoes smell a lot. After enduring and seeking solution to the problem, Rachael opted out of the union that produced three kids.

ADERIBIGBE ALLEN and SANDRA‘s marriage of one year hit the rocks after Allen filed for divorce in Oluyole Customary Court (Oyo) because he was tired of sharing house chores. “We agreed on how to do the house chores but I am tired of washing unending plates piled up in the kitchen.

“I regret marrying her and agreeing to share house chores. She is just too lazy.

EMMANUEL OBAFEMI and BIDEMI did not come to terms and their marriage eventually hit the rocks. According to Emmanuel, his wife is fond of flatulence at any point in time, and it smells horribly. He told an Igando customary court to dissolve their marriage because he can no longer cope with the habit.

She prayed the Agege (Lagos) court to dissolve the marriage because of this habit.

ADEBISI JADESIMI divorced her husband of two years because he is fond of wearing female undergarment, especially pants. “It is unbelievable that we share pants. He wouldn’t wear boxers even if you threaten to kill him, he prefers female pants.

“How would a man be wearing woman’s pants”, she narrated her ordeal to Alakuko Customary Court (Lagos).

Panicky Diezani Reaches Out To Lamorde

BY CHIDI OBINECHE

Immediate past petroleum minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke during whose tenure several allegations of corrupt practices in the industry have been flying around is literally running from pillar to post, apparently in search of reprieve.

The highly influential minister in former president Goodluck Jonathan’s government is said to have stepped up efforts, playing out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, (EFCC), buzzing the phones line of the agency’s Chairman, Ibrahim Lamorde.

Saturday Sun learnt that the calls have neither been taken nor acknowledged.

Exasperated, the Bayelsa born former senior executive of Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited reported Lamorde to the former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Aliyu Gusau (retd), complaining that the EFCC helmsman had been ignoring her calls.

It was further gathered that Gusau’s intervention earned little relief for her as Lamorde explained to the ex-NSA that Diezani had for over two and half years snubbed him.

The anti-corruption czar, according to Sunday Sun’s source told the General he would not understand her spirited efforts to reach out to him now that she was no longer in power, adding for good effect that she poured more cold water on him with a usual shrill banter. “my brother, my brother” anytime they meet at public events.

It was further learnt that the embattled lady is not giving up without a good fight as she is said be prevailing on Gusau to convene a meeting between the two of them for fence mending.

It is not yet clear whether the General has obliged her request.

Diezani has been buffeted in the last three years with unsavoury reports of sleight.

So much was the uproar that student calls were made by human rights activists and anti corruption crusaders for her sack or resignation.

Former Ceneral Bank governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi first blew that whistle over the missing $20billion oil money from the vault.

In the face of flat denials by the government and the refusal to budge to the demands of the activities for sack, a forensic audit of the accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was ordered and given to the PriceWater-CooperHouse, a reputable international firm of auditors.

The firm returned a report of a lower figure of $18billion, and urged that a minimum of $6billion be returned. The NNPC, which initially disagreed with the figure later grudgingly accepted to make gradual refunds, but is yet to keep faith with that. Coupled with that is the undying issue of petroleum subsidy which is said to be mirred in high profile corruption.

The vexed and unresolved issue of petroleum subsidy often pitched marketers against the government and has led to incessant strikes.

Attempts by both chambers of the National Assembly to wade into the issue and other oil related ones met with a brick wall as she consistently refused to honour their calls.

At the height of the investigations into the $20billion missing oil money, she ran to the court and obtained an interlocutory injunction, restraining members of the House of Representatives from summoning her.

While these events unfolded, the Presidency watched unperturbed, offering no helpful insight to the demanding public. Till date, the former petroleum minster rode the waves’-declining all calls for explanations. The attitude of the Presidency in the face of the scandal effectively put her on the “A’ list of the class of “untouchables” in Jonathan’s government.

On Friday May 24, she was reported to have run after President Muhammadu Buhari at the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport. Both were on their way on a British Airways flight to London, Buhari was first to arrive the airport and completed his boarding formalities. Diezani arrived shortly after, and on getting wind of the presence of Buhari, who was yet to be sworn-in as president then, she abandoned her aides and ran after him. It was further reported that attempts made by her to snuggle up to him and speak to him on the flight drew blank. The report is yet to be denied. Diezani is the first woman to become the president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC. As part of her controversial tenure, she flew around the world in private jets. The petroleum minister is generally acclaimed as a dark spot in Jonathan’s regime which president Buhari promised a comprehensive clean-up during the presidential campaign.

'I am Not Yusuf Buhari!'-Youngman Whose Pic Has Gone Viral Cries Out

Haaa, the power of the social media...

Three days ago, this photo went viral on the internet.

The picture was supposedly that of Yusuf Buhari and his girlfriend.

A friend posts this on his twitter page, alerting the fellow of his new 'celebrity' status.

The young man in question, Muhammad Kabir Hadejia, has come out to set things straight. Although they clearly look alike, he
definitely isn't the son of Nigeria's new president.

"My name is Muhammad Kabir Hadejia...There's a picture of myself and my sister that has gone viral on the internet with people claiming it is Yusuf Buhari, the son of the president. I see news pages on Facebook and twitter spreading the false news. I strongly deny it and would like you to help me spread the news that that picture is me and not Yusuf Buhari. I take this issue very dangerous to my safety and hopefully you will help me. Attached are my pictures so you can compare to confirm I'm real"

Open Heavens 31 May 2015: Sunday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – It Is for Your Good

Topic: It Is For Your Good [Sunday May 31, 2015]

Memorise: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. - Romans 8:28

Read: Genesis 50:15-21 (KJV)

15 And when Joseph's brethren saw that their father was dead, they said, Joseph will peradventure hate us, and will certainly requite us all the evil which we did unto him.

16 And they sent a messenger unto Joseph, saying, Thy father did command before he died, saying,

17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.

18 And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.

19 And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God?

20 But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

21 Now therefore fear ye not: I will nourish you, and your little ones. And he comforted them, and spake kindly unto them.

Bible in One Year: 1 King 2, Luke 1:26-56

MESSAGE:

From the beginning, the devil’s modus operandi has been to sow the seeds of doubt in the heart of mankind with regards to the plan and intentions of God for them. For example, while God’s reason for restraining Adam and Eve from eating the forbidden fruit was to keep them alive, healthy and prosperous, the devil came and told them that God did so because He did not have their good at heart (Genesis 3:4-5). It was this type of doubt that the devil sowed in the heart of Joseph’s brothers after the demise of their father. Thank God Joseph was a man who knew the mind of God; He quickly quenched their doubts. For us His children today, God has revealed His plans and intentions for us in Jeremiah 29:11:

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

This is not an after-thought; rather, this has always been God’s intention for us from the beginning of creation (Genesis 1:26). It is therefore a sin to doubt the good in God’s motives when He directs us to do something or live in a particular way that is contrary to what the devil or the world expects.

Because Joseph knew the mind of God concerning all that happened to him, he rejected hero-worship from his brothers and allayed their fears. He comforted them by making them understand that their negative actions towards him were used by God to fulfil His eternal good purpose in his life. Genesis 50:19-20 says:

“And Joseph said unto them, Fear not: for am I in the place of God? But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.”

In other words, Joseph was saying to his brothers that it was not they but God who sent him to Egypt for a clearly defined purpose. Paul corroborates this truth in our memory verse.

The Lord is saying to you that you should stop complaining about what is happening to you now; it is for your good. Things will work out for your good if you continue to love God even in that so-called unpleasant situation, which has a divine purpose attached to it. Once again I say to you: it is for your good, and you will soon know why.

Prayer Point: Father, according to your word, let all things work together for my good from today in Jesus’ Name.

Why Patience Jonathan Didn't Attend Buhari's Inaguration Ceremony

The absence of Patience Jonathan from the inauguration ceremony of President Muhammadu Buhari has raised different questions among Nigerians.

Mrs Jonathan, unlike other wives of Nigerian leaders was conspicuously absent from the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Many have said that Mrs Jonathan who was last seen with her husband at the inauguration dinner which heldThursday night had through her body language showed her displeasure over her husband’s outster by the current President as she never looked at the direction of President Buhari who shared the same high-table with her throughout the dinner.

However, DAILY POST has gathered that it took the intervention of friends and family for the ousted First Lady to have agreed to follow her husband to the dinner. Her reason, according to a presidency source was that she may not be able to control her emotion as it’s painful giving up power just after one term in office.

The source further disclosed that Mrs Jonathan broke down in tears after the dinner last night and that could have been responsible for her absence from Friday’s inauguration as Mr. Jonathan may not want a repeat of the Thursday-dinner episode.

Another presidency source has however debunked the rumour that the former First Lady could not attend the inauguration because she was emotionally down. The source who pleaded not to be mentioned said ” Mama Peace has an important event to attend in Otuoke, their country home. You don’t expect her to attend the inauguration when people are waiting for her arrival back home. She is not aggrieved over anything and she is not the only First lady who could not attend the inauguration. Her attendance is highly insignificant. I don’t know why you, press people are trying to make something out of that.”

Full text of President Buhari’s inaugural speech
Meanwhile, Nigerians at different places have condemned her absence, saying that even though she has the right to stay away from any major event she is not directly involved, her absence at the inauguration communicates volume as to her grudge for the new administration of President Buhari and his wife whom she said she would work with and show direction.

Borno Governor Attacks Jonathan, Seeks Amnesty For Boko Haram

Newly sworn-in Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, on Friday said his new administration would, among other policies, pursue amnesty for members of Boko Haram who are ready to de-radicalise.
Mr. Shettima, who took an oath of office to serve for yet another four years alongside his deputy, Zannah Mustapha, said he would lobby the new federal government of President Muhammadu Buhari to consider granting amnesty to the militants.
Messrs Shettima and Mustapha were sworn in by the state’s chief judge, Kashim Zannah, at the Ramat Square, amidst tight security mounted by soldiers and police officers.
Mr. Shettima’s second inauguration, although low-key, was attended by guests from within and outside Nigeria.
The governor lamented the plight of the millions of Borno residents squatting at various camps of Internally Displaced Persons at the time he was being sworn-in.
Mr. Shettima said his next four years would be dedicated to rebuilding destroyed and lost communities and also pursuing policies that would create jobs and empower the youths.
“I do not intend to spoil the celebration mood today but I simply cannot ignore the fact that as we are gathered here, looking good and so full of excitement, thousands of our fellow sons and daughters of Borno, old and young, including babies that are few days old, are displaced in their own land and country,” he said.
He added that the sad tales of destructions and the faces of “our displaced sons, daughters, brothers and sisters,” told the true story of Borno today.
The governor, who described his swearing in as “a very special day in the long history of Borno”, said his second mandate was in recognition of the effort his administration made in the past four years, “to touch your lives in several areas of human endeavour”.
He acknowledged, however, that the last four years were certainly some of the most tragic and challenging in the thousand-year history of Borno.
“We have gone through the most savage insurgency of the Boko Haram sect, which massacred thousands of our people; especially destroying the cream of Borno youth and ensuring that into the next generation, we will be faced with a demographic crisis that will challenge our creative ingenuity, to overcome,” he said.
The governor said, in spite of all these, his government still managed to remain focused to build the “basic blocks of development, in agriculture, education and empowerment.”
“And we never for a moment abandoned our people,” Mr. Shettima said. “The people appreciated how we worked with sincerity, with commitment and always defending their best interests.”
Mr. Shettima lambasted the government of Goodluck Jonathan, referring to it as “a hostile Federal Government, which lived in denial about the savagery of Boko Haram and which also saw the insurgency from the most perverted, narrow and irresponsible prism, that somehow, the insurgency had been fuelled against it, by the political and other elites of this part of Nigeria.”
“They therefore did only the barest and most perfunctory, to stem the problem. Meanwhile, our people suffered and our communities were systematically laid to waste,” he said. “Democracy became the saving grace for the people.
“With our votes, we threw out a government at the centre, which did not work in the national interest and have now voted into power, President Muhammadu Buhari, who is also being inaugurated into power today in Abuja.”
Mr. Shettima said the people of Borno now have the opportunity to put their problems before a “listening president, who would be willing to assist us with utmost dispatch, to accelerate our development.”
He said in the next four years, he would need the support of all citizens in the quest to rebuild the devastated communities of Borno state.
He promised an all-inclusive “growth that would focus on reconciliation, rehabilitation and reconstruction – the three Rs.
He also reiterated his readiness to give members of Boko Haram a chance for amnesty.
“Unless we want to engage in an endless war of attrition that will be hallmarked by the continuing destruction of lives and property, it becomes imperative that willing members of the Boko Haram sect that want to come out of the bush must be given the opportunity to be de-radicalized and then rehabilitated to become useful citizens of society,” he said.
“It is never easy to accept back into the community, those who have taken up arms, killed, pillaged, raped and destroyed. But in the long run, society must make very expensive choices for peace, reconciliation and development. We are therefore appealing to the Federal Government of Nigeria and the International Community to assist our endeavour in that regard.”

Jonathan’s Guards Forced Me To Stand In The Rain – Detained Punch Journalist

I set out on Thursday, May 28, 2015 to Otuoke, President Goodluck Jonathan ‘s country home in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State to capture the mood and the activities taking place there ahead of Jonathan’s welcome reception.

On getting to Otuoke around 10am, I went into the streets to interview residents (and community leaders) on their preparedness to receive one of their illustrious sons whose national assignment ended on Friday after losing the March 28 presidential election.

On my way back to Yenagoa, about 11:30am, I saw construction workers renovating the walls of Jonathan’s residence fence and putting finishing touches to buildings in his sprawling estate. I thought the activities were worth capturing in pictures to illustrate the views of Jonathan’s people.

So, I decided to take pictures of the activities of the construction workers. As soon as I took some shots, some operatives of the Joint Task Force guarding the gate of the estate swooped on me. They quickly ordered me to give them the BlackBerry I used to take the shots, which I obliged without hesitation. They said I was under arrest for taking the shots. Thereafter, they ordered that all my gadgets such as my Samsung Galaxy Notes, my mobile phone (Samsung Grand Prime) and my BlackBerry be seized.

They seized my office ID card and my wristwatch. They accused me of espionage and insisted that I should tell them the names of people who sponsored me. I told them I am a journalist (State correspondent for Punch Newspaper).

All my explanations did not assuage them as they were bent on torturing me. They said I was on their wanted list for running a previous story, ‘Aso Rock exit: Jonathan to live in Island Palatial estate.’ They threatened that I would pay dearly for that report.

In the process of their rough-handling me, the rain started. I was asked to stay in the rain where I was drenched. A military police officer came and asked them to allow me into the security gate. He said the commander of 5 Batallion, Otuoke, asked me to wait for him at the security gate for interrogation. I waited for close to five hours before the military police officer came in around 5pm and said the commander directed that I should be handed over to the police for further interrogation.

They drove me to Kolo Police Station in Ogbia. When we got there, I was temporarily detained behind the counter. About 30 minutes after, the Divisional Police Officer informed me that what I was accused of was a serious matter which he said they could not handle there.

The matter was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yenagoa. That was where I was allowed to make a call across to a colleague to tell my office and other journalists of my plight.

At SCID, they took my statement. In the course of writing the statement, the police spokesman, Asinim Butswatt came and said the commissioner of police wanted to see me with the ACP SCID and the investigating police officer handling the matter.

When we got to the CP’s office, I narrated what happened. After that, he asked the IPO to go and take a comprehensive statement from me. I was taken back to the state CID again where I was subjected to rigorous interrogation. At about 8pm, the IPO gave instruction that I should be ‘properly’ detained. As usual, they asked me to remove my pair of sandals, belt and shirt and I was thrown into detention by 9pm.

Inmates in the cell were cooperative on hearing that I am a journalist. Instead of beating me, they said any time I was released, I should help them to champion their cause. They said that some of them had been detained there for months without trial.

After the banter with them, I slept off. Around 12:30am, on Friday, a senior officer came and asked that I should be brought out. They brought a bail bond and asked me to fill, which I did. Thereafter, I was released on self recognition. However, I was asked to leave all my belongings there and report at the station later in the day.

100 Days From Today: What Nigerians Expect From Buhari

BY EBUN SESSOU, ANOZIE EGOLE & ADERONKE ADEYERI
The expectations of Nigerians are high as Gen. Muhammadu Buhari assumes the mantle of leadership. Nigerians yearn for change at all cost, following the high campaign promises made by the new president. They expect his government to bring succour and put an end to the numerous problems the country is presently facing. Against this background, Saturday Vanguard went round to sample the opinions of prominent as well as ordinary Nigerians on their expectations 100 days from now.
Buhari must revive the energy sector – Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, lawyer
“Gen. Buhari should address the problems surrounding energy in this country as a matter of urgency. Power generation is critical to the development of this nation. He should break the cabal controlling the importation of fuel, diesel, candles, rechargeable lamps and other imports that benefit importers to the detriment of the Nigerian populace, and revive the entire power sector so that the generation, transmission and distribution companies should be totally working. By this approach, generator and diesel importers will also be encouraged to invest in the power sector and become game changers instead of frustrating his efforts.
“It’s a cross Buhari has to carry. He was at this for 12 years. He contested in 2003, 2007, 2011, so by now, he should have a roadmap for the solutions to all the problems in Nigeria. I believe it is not our business how he will deliver.
“During his campaign, he promised Nigerians 20,000 megawatts in four years which means, in every one year, we should have 5,000 megawatts. So, it is too late to give excuses. Our business was to vote for him as president, which we did; we are waiting for results.
“We want to enjoy adequate electricity as soon as possible. There must be power in every home, office, mosque, church, bank, school among others. We are not interested in how he will do it. Power is critical to the economy of this nation and it must be addressed. Imagine the kind of hardship the country suffered recently when the entire country was grounded. If there is no power, it is difficult to survive. One is practically incapacitated without power.
“He must also tackle corruption to a standstill by sealing up available means by which our money is being siphoned. Those who are milking Nigerians, dipping their hands into the treasuries of the nation should be exposed.
“The $20 billion that was allegedly missing should be verified. He must look into the system and fight the monster called corruption. Once the resources are available and not being stolen, building industries, roads, and reviving the power sector will be possible. The resources of the nation can take Nigeria to the next level.”
He should operate truly democratic government – Tony Uranta, human rights activist
Gani Adams
“As a patriotic Nigerian living in Nigeria, it is in my enlightened self interest for President Buhari to succeed in keeping Nigeria a united, peaceful, justice-based country that prospers holistically and ensures the common good of all Nigerians. It is in the foregoing light that I join millions of Nigerians in welcoming President Buhari, even as I join millions more in wishing now ex-President Jonathan even greater heights.
“I will like to use this opportunity to remind the incoming president of the many promises he made to Nigerians, and what we eagerly expect within the first 100 days of his coming to office. We expect primarily that he will be able to stop the insecurity in the North-East once and for all. We also expect that he will radically transform the economy such that we will not have almahjiris in the North, beggars in the streets or anywhere else in Nigeria. And crime rate must be reduced generally, especially in the area of kidnapping, armed robbery and 419.
“Finally, I will not appear to be wishing him ill or to seem not to appreciate the enormous task ahead of him; we would expect that he would really and truly show us that this is a democratic civil regime coming in, which will be fully tolerant of the rights of civil society such as right of speech, right to information, right to association and other rights without, in anyway, becoming oppressive or intolerant.
“We wish him well. We hope that the press will still be vibrant under him as it was under the outgoing administration, and on that note, I say welcome President Muhammadu Buhari and we wish President Goodluck Jonathan the best and we look forward to him transforming himself into the leader of the African continent and black people worldwide.”
We expect transparency – Gani Adams, leader, Odua Peoples Congress (OPC)
“Within three months, he needs to sanitize the system. We expect transparency and he should shun corruption. We expect him to solve the problem of fuel scarcity and encourage private sectors to build refineries. Right now, Nigeria is faced with abject poverty due to lack of good infrastructure. He should revive our societal values. President Buhari should ensure that all the civil society groups are given 100 percent support. He should also look into the report of the national confab.”
He should address fragile issues – Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), lawyer
*Mr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN
“As soon as Buhari is sworn in, he should go to work. He should tackle fragile issues in the national system because there are so many fragile cracks that make the Nigerian system to be very weak and I expect these to be tackled by settling issues relating to constitution amendment, which will help to amend these cracks. He must reform our legal system.
“Secondly, he must tackle the economy agenda of the country that has given credence to unemployment and poverty. He must do that by blocking all the leakages. 25 percent of our budget goes into the National Assembly. People should live on low profile. These will safe funds which will be used on meaningful things.
“Thirdly, he must remove oil subsidy, which has led to corruption, then introduce modular refineries so as to have it across the country. He should block all the loopholes in the power sector. He should also diversify the economy. Right now, we are solely dependent on petroleum and that was clearly shown in the recent fuel scarcity. We need new energy policy that does not depend on petroleum. The maritime sector is another area which needs attention. There are a lot of expectations by Nigerians and we hope that the president will live up to them. He needs to re-define the education policy, especially in the area of university and vocational qualifications. We should look into solar energy. Another problem is to decentralize the affairs of the country.”
We need light, petrol and good cabinet – Declan Okpalaeke, journalist
“There should be long term course but short term measures. He is taking over power at a period when the country is perhaps at his lowest ebb. Everything seems to be collapsing. Petroleum has a huge effect on the economy; there is no fuel, no gas, no kerosene. There is crisis in the country. His first 100 days should concentrate on finding immediate solution to the immediate problems in the country. He should ensure that there is free flow of essential things that will make life bearable for Nigerians; ensure that there is adequate petrol in the filling stations; ensure that even though we are not generating enough power, that what we produce is adequately distributed whilst he plans to find permanent solution to it.
“He should ensure that he gets the right people into his cabinet. People whose integrity and credibility are not in doubt. If the right people are not in place, his noble ideas will be rubbished.”
He should keep all his promises – Martin Onovo, Action Congress (AC) presidential candidate
Mr Martin Onovo
“As a matter of integrity, President Buhari needs to keep the promises made during his campaign. He needs to control corruption and that is not done in one night or 100 days but the direction can be set in one month.
“We need to get power, otherwise the economy will not survive. He must not give us excuses that we have heard in the past. There must be fuel. Security must be in place. The Nigeria Police, which is the first point of security, is in a terrible mess. These are underlining critical requirement for national productivity. The idea of depending on other people to feed ourselves is one indication that no matter the number of private jets we buy, we are still very poor. We need to contribute significantly to feeding ourselves. The country needs the right education for brighter future. The fact is that there are a lot of emergencies in all the sectors.”
The structure of change must be defined – Ladipo Johnson, legal practitioner
“The type of leadership he will be providing will dictate the level of his success. He needs to stabilize the country as quickly as possible. The structure of the real change we are clamouring for should be established. People must be accountable. Although it is usually very difficult to get result in the first 100 days, he can set good examples. Once that is done, Nigerians’ orientation will change; civil servants and politicians will know that it is not business as usual. But until he gets there, he wouldn’t know those priorities begging for attention.”
Expose the rot in governance – Paul Okoroafor, lawyer
“We believe President Buhari is highly disciplined. Now is the time to prove it. As a democratic president, we are looking forward to having a transparent government. There must be enforcement and implementation of policies. We expect that he will be able to expose some of the rot in the power sector. We pay so much yet we don’t have light. He should check why there is total darkness in the country.”
We need good road network – Foster Nwosu, businessman
“I am afraid that the Nigerian system may discourage him from being transparent. I will like him to work on electricity. I believe that if there is light, Nigerians will survive. He should also create an environment where our young people can explore different job opportunities. We need good road network as well.”
End fuel problem – Emma Okechukwu, trader
“We are hoping that as soon as he is sworn-in, fuel problem will be a thing of the past, hopefully paying for fuel at the rate of N87 per litre. And we also hope there will be constant light.”
Change must manifest – Emmanuel Anyebe, scientist
“Change must manifest in every facet of the country, especially power. We need light and it must be permanent.”
He should end corruption – John Paul, surveyor
“He is the sixth democratically elected president since 1960 and we thank God for having a man like him at this time. He is a man we all know for his zero tolerance for corruption and he also has a very good military experience. Right now, he is the right man both for his experience and also for his fight against corruption. I want him to end corruption and insurgency. The incoming government should draw up policies that would alleviate poverty in the country. Buhari should cut down the cost of governance because it is killing this country.”
My expectations are high – Ugochukwu Alaeto, motorist
“My expectations are high. I expect that fuel scarcity and epileptic power supply will be addressed. We are waiting for the change he promised during his campaign.”

Open Heavens 30 May 2015: Saturday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – A Conscience Void of Offence

Topic: A Conscience Void of Offence [Saturday May 30, 2015]
Memorise: And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men. - Acts 24:16

Read: Romans 14:16-21 (KJV)
16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of:
17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.
19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.
20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence.
21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak.
Bible in One Year: 1 Kings 1, Luke 1:1-25
MESSAGE:
The Church of Jesus Christ on earth will be healthy and pleasant if Christians would live with a conscience void of offence. Unfortunately, offences often arise here and there in the Body of Christ today. This is caused by the misuse of opportunities, wealth and other material possessions. For this to be uprooted from the Church, we need to apply the spiritual principles that Apostle Paul laid down in 1 Timothy 6:17-18:
"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;"

A good number of Christians are still living under the bondage of a conscience filled with guilt. Why? It is because they have not being totally cut off from their terrible past. For instance, some of them are still living with women who are not their first wives. Some others are still living in houses they stole money to build or buy. Some find it difficult to sever their relationship with their old satanic clubs. These and many other entanglements are the reasons why they are not totally free. Some of these Christians put their pastors in tight corners, because their problems just refuse to go away. It then appears as if the pastor does not have enough anointing to deal with such problems. They then move from church to church without finding rest for their souls. The abuse of wealth and position, particularly those that are ill-gotten, robs you of a free conscience. This is why the expected life of peace, joy and contentment, which is our greatest gain and which makes us peculiar as children of God, has eluded some.
A common saying among Christians guilty of the abuse of wealth and position is "My conscience does not condemn me." The question is: which conscience are you talking about? Is it the dead one that has become reprobate? Some of them even say "As many as are led by the Spirit are the children of God." Which spirit are you talking about? Can the Spirit of God, who inspired the writing of the scripture, turn around to tell you that what He inspired men to write was a mistake? Beloved, let us not deceive ourselves any further. Let us live a Christian life devoid of offence against God and men, particularly those of the household of faith.
Prayer Point: Father, with the Blood of Jesus, please purge my conscience of all dead works that bring offence, in Jesus' Name.

Open Heavens 29 May 2015: Friday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye – What Has Your Affection?

Friday, 29 May 2015

Topic: What Has Your Affection? [Friday May 29, 2015]

Memorise: Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. - Colossians 3:2.

Read: Colossians 3:1-6 (KJV)

1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

2. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

3. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

4. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

5. Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

6. For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:

Bible in One Year: 2 Samuel 23-24, Mark 15:33-16:8

MESSAGE:

I have observed that one of the reasons why many Christians find it difficult to live according to the standards of the Bible today is that their mind is not set on the things of heaven, and the reason for this is the coming of material prosperity to the church. Is it then a mistake that God has prospered us materially? Certainly not! Abraham was blessed, Isaac was blessed and Jacob was also blessed, but yet, they all served the Lord. King David even blessed the Lord for material prosperity among other things. Psalm 103:1&5 says,

“Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name…. who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

I have always said that the grace you need to manage material prosperity is far greater than the grace you need to manage poverty. When God begins to prosper you, you must begin to pray harder for more grace to manage the prosperity, or else, your affection may shift from the things of heaven. It is foolishness to serve the Lord and be mindful of the things of heaven when you are poor, only for you to forget the Lord who has prospered you when the wealth comes. This is why the Bible inProverb 1:32 says:

“For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”

For many children of God, when they were will still struggling to make ends meet, their prayers used to be “Thy Kingdom come” Nowadays; they live their lives as if they are not going to die any more, and as if Jesus cannot come at any moment. It’s not hard to identify those whose affection is set on the things of heaven, because they are always busy investing in the expansion of God’s kingdom. Because their investments are in heaven, their hearts are always thinking about heaven.

“But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” -Matthew 6:20-21

There is no certainty in whatever treasures you keep on earth. Your investment in the things of heaven is what you will be left with if you make it to heaven. Therefore, begin to set your affections on heavenly things from today.

Prayer Point: Sweet Holy Spirit, fill my heart with love for the things of heaven in Jesus’ Name.
