Olusegun Obasanjo busy fighting his last battle against Nigeria

Image result for obasanjoIt seems that, ahead of the elections, Nigerians of all walks of life have taken to drawing conclusions and summarising past events before entering a new political era. Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye assesses Olusegun Obasanjo’s impact on Nigeria during his years in office and beyond.

Dear readers, I am tempted by the current state of affairs in Nigeria to coin this piece. I am angered by the attitude of the creature whom God has favoured with long life and prosperity despite his many sins against Nigeria and her people. The Owu, Ogun State-born former Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo, who doesn’t need introduction in the political firmament of Nigeria and outside the shore, is the man.

From a relatively unknown soldier, he rose to become the number two citizen of Nigeria in 1975. In 1976, God extended the tentacle of his mercy to him by promoting him from number two to number one citizen of the most populous black nation in the world. In 1999, he was, through the support of the majority of Nigerians, catapulted from prison into Aso Villa by some leaders of thought such as Generals Ibrahim Babangida, T.Y Danjuma, Chiefs Alex Ekwueme, Orji Uzor Kalu, Atiku Abubakar, etc.

Today, Obasanjo is known globally for resolving international disputes, most especially on the continent of Africa. Obasanjo is also known for his unique speeches at both local and international events. He is also reputed for constantly penning emotional and controversial letters to leaders within and outside the country.

However, let me confidently state that Obasanjo has not done much for Nigeria despite miraculously rising through the rank and file of the country’s military and democratic institutions to become crème de la crème. Obasanjo has impoverished Nigerians more than any other Nigerian leaders via his impious policies and actions.

Prior to the 1979 presidential election, most Nigerians preferred the revered the late political sage Obafemi Awolowo to be their President. But Obasanjo, as the military head of state, with the assistance of some internal and external forces, foisted an unpopular intellectual Lilliputian operating in an unbefitting office as a secondary school principal in Shagari Village, Sokoto State, on Nigerians. Awolowo and Obasanjo hail from the same state in Southwestern Nigeria.

As a result of Obasanjo’s action, Nigeria went up in political and economic flames. History has it that Obasanjo perceived Awolowo as a “hard nut” that would be too hard to crack for him if he was allowed to be the President; hence, his decision to impose a “Lilliput” on Nigerians. Obasanjo was apparently scared Awolowo would probe his failed Ajaokuta Steel project. He was scared Awolowo would probe the billions of Nigeria his Operation Feed the Nation (OFN) has gulped from the treasury.

In 1993, when most Nigerians within and outside diaspora were agitating for the affirmation of the results of June 12 presidential election believed to have been won by MKO Abiola, Obasanjo conspired with his clan in the North to ensure that the struggle to actualize the lawfully given mandate of Abiola never materialized. Abiola died in prison.

In 1999, upon the return of the country to civilian rule, the Southwestern Nigeria was ceded the presidential slots of the two political parties in the country. The PDP handed its presidential ticket to Obasanjo and went on to triumph over his opponent, Olu Falae of the Alliance for Democracy (AD). However, for all eight uninterrupted years Obasanjo ruled Nigeria, not a single street was named after MKO Abiola whose glory he (Obasanjo) rode to power. Instead of empowering Abiola’s clan, Obasanjo strangulated his family, killed all his business empires. Under the watchful eye of Obasanjo, the once-happy home of Abiola became a history. He got power and betrayed all his benefactors.

In 2007, well-meaning political actors with sound minds, blessed with intellectual sagacity and erudition, grounded and rooted, suave and courteous, signified their interest to run for the Presidency of Nigeria. However, just like he did in 1979, Obasanjo imposed a visibly unfit and weak Umaru Musa Yar’adua on Nigerians.

His goal was, however, not met as the physically unfit Yar’Adua distanced himself from him. As usual, Obasanjo joined opposition forces to declare war against Yar’Adua when the latter was terribly ill. The tenure of Yar’Adua was terminated through the help of a civilian coup called doctrine of necessity.

In 2011, when Nigerians agitated that for the sake of peace, fairness and natural justice, the North should be allowed to produce presidential candidate of the PDP, Obasanjo kicked. He colluded with his footsoldiers across and outside the shore of Nigeria to impose Goodluck Jonathan on Nigerians thinking he would be able to remotely control Nigeria from his farm in Otta. But Obasanjo met a stiff resistance from Jonathan and his crew. Obasanjo’s move to neo-colonize Jonathan’s administration was rejected, hence, the beginning of another war.

Between 1999 to 2007, Obasanjo had a golden opportunity to write his name in gold among his Yoruba ethnic nationality but failed. He fought Nigerians from the South of Limpopo to the desert of Sahara. He sent his snipers in army uniforms to Odi village in Bayelsa State to roast the community. The offense of the people of Odi was that they killed an armed soldier on duty in the town. Odi people were wrong but Obasanjo goofed.

Obasanjo gave Nigerians GSM but he didn’t end his tenure without killing the Nigeria Telecommunication (NITEL), sending thousands of bread-winners to the labour market without terminal benefits. Many died in the process while those still alive among ex-NITEL staff live in squalor and starvation. Instead of re-organizing NITEL, Obasanjo sold Nigeria to a South Africa-owned company MTN. Obasanjo ensured that FSTV is killed for another South Africa-owned firm, DSTV, to take over Nigeria’s market. What a leader!

Furthermore, as a president for eight years, Obasanjo had an opportunity to reconstruct Lagos-Ibadan expressway, but he did not. Being an Owu-born, he failed to rehabilitate Lagos-Abeokuta road. Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso-Ilorin roads were death traps during Obasanjo’s reign. Ikorodu-Sagamu road was a no-go area when Obasanjo held the insignia of power. Ibadan-Ife, Ilesa-Akure and Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode roads were left untouched by Obasanjo despite him being the Nigerian Minister of Works for about 3 years. Obasanjo awarded the dualization of Lokoja-Abuja road without mobilizing the contractor.

Obasanjo would always be remembered for how he subjected Lagosians to hardship for 3 years. As a sitting president, Obasanjo disregarded the ruling of the Supreme Court of Nigeria that the Lagos State local governments’ allocations, which he withheld, be paid.

Obasanjo and his deputy Atiku Abubakar sold virtually all Nigeria’s public properties and corporations to their cronies. All what the founding fathers of Nigeria labored to build went into the flame of few pockets. He spent $16billion on power without giving Nigerians the power proper.

Moreso, Obasanjo increased the price of petroleum from N11 to N70. He met a US dollar at N83, but left it at N150.

Without creating an enabling ground for automobile companies in Nigeria to innovatively and productively operate, Obasanjo banned importation of fairly used cars into the country.

As a sitting president, Obasanjo, in flagrant disregard of the rules, tactically summoned all the stakeholders in Nigeria’s economy and politics to Abeokuta to donate to his personal presidential library.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which Obasanjo established, directly and indirectly became a tool used between 2004 to 2007 to wage war against those not the liking of the Federal Government. Nigeria was ranked by Transparency International as the second most corrupt country in the world during Obasanjo’s presidency.

Let me also remind Nigerians that the 2007 election that Obasanjo supervised was declared by the United Nations as the worst in the history of democratic governance in Africa.

Obasanjo’s military training could not save the people of Niger Delta when he was ruling Nigeria. During his reign, militants operated unhindered on the streets of Port Harcourt, Warri, Yenagoa, etc.

The level of political killings and human rights abuse during Obasanjo’s presidency was second to none. Under Obasanjo, a sitting Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, was gruesomely murdered inside his bedroom in Ibadan. A sitting Nigerian Governor Dr. Chris Ngige was kidnapped for three days. A prominent Lagos politician, Engineer Funso Williams, was gunned down inside his bedroom in Ikoyi. Gbenga Aruleba of the African Independent Television, a journalist, was held in police custody for two weeks for daring to criticize Obasanjo’s administration while on air. Governors Ayo Fayose (Ekiti), Joshua Dariye (Plateau), Rasheed Ladoja (Oyo) and Peter Obi (Anambra) were controversially and allegedly impeached on the instruction of Obasanjo.

He awarded contracts to his cronies without monitoring them leading to non-execution of the jobs.

Despite Obasanjo’s countless sins against Nigeria and her people, today, he is regarded as a pro-Nigeria by some hypocritical elements because he has agreed to be recruited as an advocate of change echoed by the opposition APC. With due respect to the APC leaders and its presidential candidate, General Muhammad Buhari (rtd.), I want to expressly declare without any fear of intimidation that the open endorsement of Buhari’s candidacy by Obasanjo is an automatic indictment of the party and an affirmation that the APC were those who misgoverned Nigeria between 1999 to 2007.

As a Nigerian, I am against any attempt to return Nigeria to Obasanjo. Obasanjo and his trusted allies do not deserve top leadership positions again in Nigeria. He’s one of the major architects militating against Nigeria. Therefore, I see the battle that Obasanjo has declared against the incumbent President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, as a battle against the nation of Nigeria which must be repelled by all means necessary.

As a general and at 77, Obasanjo is certainly fighting his last political battle. Those who love Nigeria must join hands together to ensure that the coming battle is pursued and fought by all means necessary.

Lawyers attack Jonathan over 90-hectares of land acquired for himself in Abuja.

The All Progressives Congress and some lawyers have faulted President Goodluck Jonathan’s acquisition of 90.04 hectares of farmland at the Aviation Village in Abuja barely seven months after he was sworn into office.
Image result for jonathan landThey said his action was a clear breach of the provisions of section 138 and 5th Schedule of the 1999 Constitution, Parts 1 and 2.
The APC, in a statement on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary,   Lai Mohammed, therefore asked Jonathan to apologise for abusing his office and   engaging in corrupt practices by acquiring the farmland as a sitting President.
It said nothing could justify the indiscretion exhibited by the President in acquiring such a swath as contained in a newspaper advert   which had yet to be refuted by him.
A group, the Purpose Driven Initiative, had in the advertorial claimed that Jonathan incorporated Ebele Integrated Farms Limited which he used   to acquire the land.
The APC said the claim by the President’s apologists that their boss got the land because he wanted to engage in farming and that a former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, did the same while in office, missed the point.
According to the APC, the claim by the apologists that the 5th Schedule, Part 1 (Code of Conduct for Public Officers) of the   constitution empowers a President to engage in farming, was also not tenable.
It stated that the issues involved went beyond the fact that a public officer was legally allowed to engage in farming .
‘The Fifth Schedule Part 1(Code of Conduct for Public Officers) of the 1999 Constitution, Section 1 states that, a public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflicts with his duties and responsibilities.’
“Would President Jonathan have been given 90.04 hectares of such a prime land were he not a sitting President?,” the APC asked. It said the President leveraged on his   office to “grab” the land.
The APC statement partly read, ‘‘What happened in that Abuja land grab is nothing but the height of indiscretion and abuse of office, and cannot be justified or explained away just like that. Without mincing words, it also amounts to corruption, which is defined in part as a perversion of integrity and a glaring instance of bad leadership.”
It   said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Bala Mohammed, was emboldened to also grab   land in the area   because the President had done so.
The APC said,   “Those pushing this kind of argument are worsening the President’s case and insulting Nigerians. When did one bad act become a justification for another? Does a thief escape punishment by saying he stole because someone else had stolen? If indeed Chief Obasanjo did it, does that make it right? Is this not part of the reasons this President has been unable to fight corruption?
“It is also important to point out that the Aviation Village, under the Abuja Master plan, is meant only for Aviation-related activities and not farming.
“The President knew this, yet he went ahead to apply and was allocated land for farming in the Aviation Village.
“Perhaps his intention is to subsequently apply for a change of use. How many other people were allocated land for farming in the Aviation Village?’’
The APC asked   Jonathan to immediately give back the land he has grabbed.
Some   lawyers – Jiti Ogunye,   Festus Keyamo and Monday Ubani – in separate interviews with The PUNCH in Abuja, also   faulted   the     acquisition of the land by the President.
Ogunye argued that act of corruption was not limited to dipping hands into public treasury but also “includes all forms of illicit conduct in office in violation of the code of conduct and other laws of the land.”
Ogunye likened the President’s action to an attitude   common with Nigerian leaders, who he said, “are involved in primitive acquisition of capital, including fixed assets, like land.”
He added, “Land belongs to the people, so says the Land Use Act. The Land Use Act says, the President, a governor or the Federal Capital Territory minister is a trustee of the land for the people.
“When that trustee then uses his position to acquire public resources, including fixed assets, which in this case is large expanse of land, which he ought not to have obtained while in office, it is condemnable.
“The critical question is that what kind of farming is he going to use that large size of land for? Is it for cocoa or groundnut?
“This act is condemnable regardless of who is in power – be it Obasanjo or Jonathan.”
Keyamo on his part said though the law allowed a President to be involved in farming while in office,   Jonathan had no defence for acquiring the land since he had not started using it for the purpose for which he claimed to have acquired it.
Keyamo said, “Farming is an exception. Public officer can acquire land for farming. But the President has not started the farming. Since he has not started it, there is no evidence that he wants to use it for farming.
“The issue of farming is an exception for public officers, but the truth is that we don’t know what he wants to use it for. He can later build an estate there or use it for a big business. We don’t know what it is meant for. It is what you know that you can defend.”
Ubani, a former Chairman, Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, said the President and many state governors were       guilty of   illicit acquisition of land.
He said, “They all abuse powers. Even in Lagos. It is something that happens across all the states of the federation. It is not limited to the federal level.
“The Land Use Act says land should be held in trust for the people. But the manner in which these public officials abuse their powers shows that they are not holding the land in trust for the people but in trust for themselves.
“They acquire land meant for public purposes and sometimes revoke the land of citizens and allot it to their friends, cronies and even to themselves.”
The Presidency had on Sunday said that Jonathan had not done anything against the laws of the land by owning a farmland in Abuja.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, said, ‘‘It is not against the constitution for either a civil servant or a public officer to engage in farming.
“One APC-funded, motivated and inspired NGO placed an advert in a newspaper, alleging that the President and the Minister of the FCT have farms somewhere in Abuja. They were alleging conflict of interest.”

NAFDAC nabs Chinese Man for Importing Fake Goods into Nigeria

Image result for chinese man fake goodsA Chinese national, Lu Pengqing was on Monday arraigned by the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) at the Federal High Court, Awka, Anambra State over importation and sales of unregistered and counterfeit products in the state. He was accused on a five-count charge before Justice Gafa’i Bature, which included possession of counterfeit products, importation of product without registration and distribution of product without registration. The accused however, pleaded not guilty to all the charges. The prosecutor, Mr Umar Shamaki, had said Pengqing was arrested with the unregistered and counterfeit diapers at 9 Awka Road, Onitsha in Anambra on February 10. However, NAFDAC prayed the court to remand the accused in prison custody with his passport confiscated . Counsel to the accused, Mr Emeka Nathaniel, argued that his client was not importing or selling counterfeit and unregistered products as alleged and prayed that the court grant the accused lenient and favourable bail. In his ruling, Justice Bature, granted the accused bail on three conditions; while adjourning the hearing of the case to May 6. The accused must produce two sureties, who were civil servants, serving and working in Anambra, and secondly, the court would have to verify the residence of the accused in Onitsha. Also, the accused shall deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the court.

Military arrests B’Haram fighters disguised as women

Troops involved in the ongoing counter terrorism operation in the North-East have arrested a number of terrorists who disguised as women in Baga, Borno State.
(1) A disguised terror suspect arrested by soldiers in Baga, Borno State. (2) A Boko Haram vehicle on fire also in Baga. (3) Troops on the street of the recaptured Baga.Baga, the headquarters of the Multi National joint Task Force, was captured by the insurgents in January but was recaptured by the Special Forces on Saturday.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, who stated this in a statement on Monday, did not give the exact number of the terrorists arrested.
Olukolade had said in an earlier statement on Sunday that troops were screening a group of people mostly women in Baga to ascertain their true identities and to find out whether they were supporters of the deadly sect or not.
The Defence spokesman said that the troops had arrested many terrorists hiding in Baga apart from those captured during the battle to liberate the town.
Olukolade, who also said that several arms and bombs hidden at some locations within Baga had been recovered, stated that those in custody were being interrogated.
He said, “The cordon and search in Baga has revealed some terrorists disguising as women.
“The searches are also yielding more discoveries of arms especially bombs hidden in various locations, especially Baga town.
“Apart from those captured in the course of fighting, many terrorists hiding in the town are being arrested and troops are still busy interrogating the suspects.
“In furtherance of the mission to clear terrorists from all their enclaves by the military, the Nigerian Air Force has stepped up its air bombardments of identified targets in Gwoza, Bama and Sambisa forest, preparatory to other phases of the mission.
“The air strikes have been highly successful as they achieved the aims, hitting vital targets with required precision. Terrorists are now in disarray as they scamper to escape from the impact of air bombardment of their locations in the forest.”
He said that the military was now preoccupied with the consolidation of the liberated areas to pave the way for the return of the residents after flushing out the terrorists from Baga.@punchng

PDP and APC Opposes Suit Against Use Of PVC

Image result for apc pdpPDP and APC Opposes Suit Against Use Of PVC The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have opposed a suit challenging the decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the use of the electronic Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) in the general elections. The suit was filed by the Society for Advancement and Protection of Public Rights (SAPPR) and it came up for mention at the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Monday. It is challenging the power of the INEC to use of the electronic voting system without legislation by the National Assembly. According to the group, the electoral umpire cannot evoke an administrative fiat. It said the electoral body’s actions were illegal, null and void. The suit filed by the SAPPR seeks to restrain the INEC from using the PVC and card readers for the forthcoming polls, on the grounds that they were likely to lead to the disenfranchisement of eligible voters. However, the PDP, APC, General Muhammadu Buhari and the Incorporated Trustees of Physical and Civil Rights Enlightenment Foundation sought to be joined as co-defendants with INEC, to oppose the suit. Lawyer to the litigants, who did not oppose their applications for joinder, however, wondered what injuries the suit would cause the various parties challenging the suit. The judge adjourned the suit till March 18 for mention. The general elections have been rescheduled to hold on March 28 and April 11 from an earlier date of February 14 and 28 and the INEC has insisted that only voters with the Permanent Voters Cards would be allowed to vote.

Open Heavens 24 February 2015: Tuesday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye - Power in His Name

Topic: Power in His Name [Tuesday February 24, 2015]

Memorise: Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. - Psalm 29:2

Read: (Philippians 2:9-11 KJV)

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lor

Bible in one year: Ezekiel 16, Revelation 5:1-6:2

MESSAGE:

One of the first things that a genuinely born-again Christian will quickly recognise about the Christian experience is the fact that there is power in the Name of Jesus. Immediately a fellow accepts Jesus as Lord and Saviour, the powers that used to manipulate and controls things in the person’s life become paralysed as he or she begins to call upon the Name of the Lord. This is simply because all power belongs to Jesus (Matthew 28:18), and He has deposited so much of his power in His Name. Seldom do you have the Lord making the same statement twice at one instance, but He did this with regard to His Name in John 14:13-14, saying:
d, to the glory of God the Father.
“And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.”
At the mention of the Name of Jesus, irrespective of the environment or circumstance, every shall bow in heaven, on earth and under the earth (Philippians 2:10-11). The power in the Name of Jesus is so potent and active that there is no limitation whatsoever to what you can achieve through the application of the Name. The dead has come alive by the Name, sorrow has been turned to joy in many lives by the Name, and the Name has brought salvation to billions of souls.

The Name of Jesus carries supreme authority and unlimited power. Having understood this truth, you ought to praise His Name at all times and deploy the power in His Name against all challenges and circumstances you are confronted with. A certain man caught the revelation of the power in the Name of Jesus even before His death and resurrection, and he displayed it. He was not even one of the disciples who were with Jesus or among those who followed Jesus at all times. Yet, he understood the power in the Name of Jesus and he took advantage of it. Mark 9:38-39 says:
“And John answered him, saying, Master, we say one casting out devils in thy name, and he followeth not us: and we forbad him, because he followeth not us. But Jesus said, forbid him not: for there is no man which shall do a miracle in my name, that can lightly speak evil of me.”
The power in the Name of Jesus will do you no good if you do not apply it. As you call upon the Name of Jesus today, may the potent power in His Name work for you in Jesus’ Name.

Action Point: Praise the power in the Name of Jesus and then hold Him to His word by asking for your heart’s desire in His Name.

Okonjo-Iweala’s homily on public corruption

THE Finance Minister’s acknowledgement of the need by the Federal Government to expedite action on the war on corruption in order to stop leakages and maximise the dwindling oil revenues is imperative to Nigeria’s future. But it is also certain to fail unless senior cabinet ministers like her climb down from their high horse and admit the lack of political will by the Jonathan government to clean up the Augean stables.
Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-IwealaIt is unsurprising that Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala chose the public lecture, “Blocking Leakages Amid Dwindling Oil Income,” organised by the Catholic Secretariat, Abuja, to once again defend the Jonathan administration’s poor scorecard on graft, thus sending the wrong message that she is an anti-corruption champion. Defending the indefensible when the facts are not on your side is always a difficult task.
Appearing on the surface to be a frank assessment of the contemporary history of corruption and “the best strategic way of tackling” it, the sermon Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala preached to her audience was lacking in truth and sincerity. She said, “The cause of the disease is we don’t have in place the institutions, the systems and the processes to block and prevent it in the first place. That’s the only difference between us and the people abroad.”
It is easier to articulate what should be done than it is to be certain that it will happen. Though the minister is right in what technology can do in preventing corruption, as shown by the introduction of the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System in saving N208 billion and weeding out 62,893 “ghost workers” from the payroll system, Okonjo-Iweala is economical with the truth by ignoring the role this government has played in either weakening or completely destroying even the arguably feeble “institutions, systems and processes,” it met on the ground. The story of the Jonathan administration’s anti-graft effort is a classical case of how to cripple and destroy institutions rather than how to build them.
With all its imperfections, Nigeria started a serious effort to fine-tune its corruption laws and build appropriate institutions to enforce them. The emergence of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, the Budget Monitoring and Price Intelligence Unit and similar agencies were clear efforts at erecting institutional bulwarks against corruption by the Obasanjo government (1999 – 2007).
And just after, especially on Jonathan’s watch, the war slowed down to a halt, leaving us with hollow pronouncements like Okonjo-Iweala’s. Or what do you make of an Attorney-General like Mohammed Adoke, and his immediate predecessor, Michael Aaondoakaa, who acted as breaks on the anti-graft drive rather than as its accelerators? For corruption charges to be dropped or a soft landing arranged, all that a public official facing corruption charges needs to do is to be on the side of government. Who is then subverting the “institutions, systems and processes”?
Nigerians are still trapped in darkness and the economy marooned at the lowest level of development mainly due to the abuse and misuse of “institutions, systems and processes” by public officials in selling the unbundled power firms to their companies and cronies, who lack the wherewithal and the technical expertise to play in the market.
Indeed, that would not be the first time Okonjo-Iweala would defend this government on such a spurious ground. In an April 2013 interview, where Christiane Amanpour of the CNN pointedly accused the Jonathan government of granting a pardon to a former governor who was convicted of stealing millions of dollars, the minister’s quick response was: “…I strongly believe that we lack institutions. We lack processes.” There was also the frightening case of Stella Oduah, an aviation minister, who requested that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority purchase bulletproof cars for her. The officials obliged, spending $1.6 million of the agency’s funds to buy two BMW SUVs to massage Oduah’s vanity. The 2012 N2.53 trillion fuel subsidy scam and the cover-up that followed it are well known.
It is said that no bureaucracy can police itself efficiently. That is why most anti-graft watchers, including Transparency International, recommend that graft can be reduced only if whistleblowers and non-state actors play an active role. But what has the government made of the Nuhu Ribadu-led Committee on Petroleum Revenue Task Force that uncovered, among other things, a missing $183 million in signature bonuses paid by oil firms between 2008 and 2011 after some whistleblowers raised the red flag? Or how far has the EFCC gone in unravelling other serious allegations, including the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparent Initiative’s that the nation lost a total of N272.9 billion to graft, non-remittance of revenues by oil companies, vandalism and inefficiency of the public refineries between 2009 and 2011?
No doubt, building strong institutions is fundamental to running a transparent system, making them work by ensuring criminal prosecution of offenders is a more effective way to fight a systemic culture of graft. Many local and foreign reports have categorically accused this government of lacking the political will to tackle corruption. A 2014 United States report, entitled, “Corruption and Lack of Transparency in Government,” confirmed the often-stated view that the efforts of the anti-graft agencies are deliberately stymied by the government.
Regardless of what Okonjo-Iweala would want the public and the international community to believe, the Jonathan government has not demonstrated courage and conviction in the crusade against graft, as the US Department of State 2012 once stated, in order to “send a clear signal that the country is indeed committed to good governance, to the security of its citizens, and to its rightful place as a significant actor on the global stage.”
For leadership to be credible, a report, “The Fight Against Corruption: A World Bank Perspective” says, it must transcend mere pronouncements or ethical exhortations to combat the evils of corruption. It needs to be backed by concrete, monitorable and time-bound actions, to which the country’s leadership is held accountable. That’s the only difference, to use the minister’s words, between us and the people abroad.

Gunmen kidnap Amaechi’s aide

UNKNOWN gunmen struck again in Rivers State, kidnapping the one of the aides of the state Governor, Mr. Freddy Ndigbara.
Ndigbara, who is an anchorman to Governor Rotimi Amaechi events inside and outside Government
House, Port Harcourt, was whisked away on Sunday by hoodlums in Kaani Community, Khana Local Government Area of the state.
Rivers State Governor Rotimi AmaechiIt was learnt that Ndigbara, who is popularly called Freddie by Government House workers, was accosted and forced him into a waiting car by the gunmen during a ward rally organised by the All Progressives Congress in the area.
Oblivious of the danger lying ahead of him, the kidnap victim was said to have travelled from Port Harcourt to his home town to be part of the rally.
The hoodlums, according to an eyewitness, had stormed the rally with a red Toyota Highlander sports utility vehicle, made a quick search for their target before forcing him into the car.
It was learnt that the organisers were planning to arrange a canopy at the venue of the rally when the kidnappers struck.
The PUNCH learnt that Ndigbara’s abductors immediately sped off to an unknown destination, just as members of the party in Kaani, Ward Six took cover to avoid being shot by the suspected kidnappers.
Speaking on the incident, a former Chief Press Secretary to Amaechi, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said a group of gunmen suspected to be thugs working for the Peoples Democratic Party, invaded the rally and took Ndigbara away.
“Yes, Freddie was kidnapped today by a group of men during a rally organised by the APC in Kaani Community Ward Six. The men came in a red Toyota Highlander and took him (Ndigbara) away,” Wikina, who is also an Ogoni indigene, said.
Describing Ndigbara as a gentleman and an easy-going journalist, Wikina condemned his abduction and called on the kidnappers to release him unconditionally.
“The action of those who kidnapped Freddie is condemnable and we call on them to release him unconditionally. Ndigbara is a gentleman that abhors violence,” he stressed.

Buhari’ll never be president –Fayose

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Sunday boasted that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), “will never be Nigeria president again.”
Image result for ayodele fayoseThe governor also challenged the former Head of State to swear by the Holy Quran that he did not visit the hospital in the United Kingdom last week.
Fayose, who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said, “I wish they can see spiritually what I am talking about that Buhari, despite the hullabaloo will never be president. I predicted my return as Ekiti State governor and I am saying it again that Buhari will never rule Nigeria again.
“After President Goodluck Jonathan, there will be a young element in his late 50s from the North that will be Nigerian president. I want to liken this revelation to the story of Elijah and Elisha. I am the Elijah while my followers are Elisha.”
He said he never wished Buhari dead.
He added, “I owe it a duty to Nigeria and its people to expose the antics of the APC cabal whose only interest is to seize power to further selfish interests.
“Without doubt, it is obvious that members of this cabal in the APC is trying so hard to deceive Nigerians on Buhari’s health status. That is the reason they have been using photoshop pictures to defend their lies on Buhari’s UK trip.
“First, they used a March 5, 2013 picture, claiming that Buhari was taking a walk in London on Thursday. Later they came up with another poorly cropped picture of Buhari with former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
“The same people who lied in September 2012 that they received a gold card invitation to attend the Democratic National Convention in the United States of America are behind the dressing of Buhari in the garment of lies and I challenge Buhari to swear by the Holy Quran that he did not visit hospital in the United Kingdom last week.”
But, a group in the Ekiti State has described Fayose as a “political stalker” whose actions should be viewed as a threat to the life of Buhari.
In a statement by its spokesperson, Mr. Segun Dipe, the Action Group operating within the APC in Ekiti, asked Fayose to tender an unreserved apology for having the general on his death-wish list.
Dipe said, “Everyone should put Fayose on notice how his words and deeds have been threatening the life of General Buhari.
“The indecorous governor is bent on seeing the APC presidential candidate dead before the March 28 presidential election because his party is sure of losing the election, and he feels he will stew for it.
“That a Fayose could be hounding Buhari with death threat is quite unwarranted and unfortunate. He has sent spies after our presidential candidate and may soon start toying with the idea of snipers, that is, if he has not already.
“That Fayose is fraudulent, corrupt, inept, indecorous and uncouth is not in doubt. That he is unambiguous in his wish for Buhari’s death is not in doubt either. What is worrisome to us is why the twice-lucky governor should be trailing the General even beyond the shores of Nigeria, to ensure that his wish against him comes to pass.”
Dipe hinted that his group was aware that Fayose in his alleged desperation to see Buhari dead had travelled to UK just about the same time that Buhari travelled and had been trailing the movement of the General abroad.
He said, “He wants to hold on to power by all means possible and he knows that an integrity-driven person like Buhari as president would clip his wings.
“Our group is calling on all well-meaning persons in Nigeria and across the globe to call Fayose to order as his actions and words amount to not only wishing Buhari dead but driving the General to his death. God forbid.
“The group also calls on all sons and daughters of Ekiti who are desirous of rejecting the toga of indecorous and gluttony, which Fayose has brought on them, to come out enmasse and vote General Buhari in as president come March 28, as well as the candidates presented by APC for all the other political positions at the polls.

“A vote for APC is a vote against Fayose’s indecorous ways and PDP’s clueless impunity.”

My men’ll kill in self defence, Mbu insists

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Lagos, Mr. Joseph Mbu, has said that there is no big deal in the number of people policemen under his command can kill in self-defence.
Image result for police mbuHe said since policemen were also human beings, they should be ready to take revenge on any violent group(s) that might attack them or other innocent citizens.
Mbu spoke with some journalists in Olorunsogo, Ogun State, during the inauguration of the Olorunsogo II Power Station by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The journalists had approached the AIG, who led policemen to provide security for the President at the event, to clarify the controversial statement credited to him that 20 civilians would be hacked down for every policeman killed.
“If one of my men is killed, I shall kill 20 of them, but don’t shoot first. If they shoot you, shoot back in self-defence. Anybody who fires you, fire him back in self-defence,” Mbu had been quoted in the media to have told his men at the Ogun State Police Command Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, during a recent visit.
Mbu on Friday said the media account was mischievous and contrary to what he said in Abeokuta.
He also said that he contemplated arresting the journalists who wrote the reports to show proof that he indeed said what was reported.
Curiously, however, Mbu restated the media account he had tried to debunk.
He said, “I still stand by what I said. And what I said is very clear: that if any violent group attacks my policemen, my policemen should attack them violently.
“If any violent group attacks a law-abiding citizen in a bid to cause injury or cause harm, the police should repel and save that law-abiding citizen because we have the powers to do so.
“If hoodlums or touts decide to be lawless; carrying knives, carrying illegal firearms and shooting at my policemen, if they shoot at my policemen and they are a hundred or 200, my policemen will not be looking at them. They will reply back in self-defence.
“The number I kill is immaterial because a policeman is also a human being.”
When asked if his strategy of fire-for-fire is the best way to handle the situation, Mbu answered, “Which other way do you think you can handle it? You will shoot at the police. Is it not when the person is alive that he is coming to give evidence? How will somebody who is violently attacking others be stopped; how are you going to stop him? Are you going to use your hands? You must repel him using a stronger force.”

Six dangers of consuming Soft Drinks

With more and more soft drink brands entering the market virtually everyday, one will think they have lots to offer in terms of health benefits. Unfortunately they don’t! To say that soft drinks do more harm than good will be putting it mildly. The truth is apart from the immediate feeling they give you, they do not offer anything good at all. Here are the top reasons why you should stop taking soft drinks if you really are care about your health. 1. Soft drinks have no nutritional value Considering that soft drinks are filled with sugar and calories, they offer little or nothing in terms of nutrition. This is because these are two things you want to actually avoid to stay healthy. Infact, even diet soft drinks do not offer any nutritional benefit except that they contain less calories and sugar. If your goal is rehydration, then plain water can do that without bringing along the calories and sugar. 2. Soft drinks are a major factor in obesity and diabetes A can of coke contains as much as 10 cubes of sugar and you will need to cycle for 25 minutes to burn the calories. The sweetener used in most soft drinks is high-fructose corn syrup. This type of sugar has been linked to several conditions including obesity and diabetes. Diet soft drinks can also contribute to this because the sweetener used in them have been found to lead to increased appetite and makes it more difficult to lose weight. People who take one or more sugary drinks a day have been found to be more likely to have Type 2 Diabetes than those who don’t. 3. Soft drinks and dentition Soft drinks are made with carbonated water and this weakens tooth enamel, leading to the formation of cavities and tooth decay. The sugar in these drinks also coats the teeth allowing bacteria to thrive in the mouth. Studies have shown that soft drinks alone are responsible for doubling or tripling the cases of tooth decay. 4. Soft drinks and weakened Bones Soft drinks can be a factor in cases of osteoporosis where the bones are weakened. This is especially true in those who substitute the intake of milk with soft drinks. Children who consume excessive soft drinks have also been found to be at a significant risk of impairment in the calcification of their growing bones. 5. Metabolic Syndrome This syndrome combines high blood pressure, high cholesterol, insulin resistance with obesity. Soft drinks have unfortunately been found to be a major risk factor for the development of this syndrome. 6. Dehydration You may think that soft drinks are good for rehydration. It is important to note that the rehydration is short-lived. Many soft drinks contain significant amounts of caffeine. Caffeine is a kind of diuretic that causes an increase in the volume of urine passed. The excess sugar also causes more water to be lost from your body. There are several healthy alternative drinks that you can take instead of soft drinks and they include tea, natural fruit juice, coffee, low fat milk and plain water

Open Heavens 23 February 2015: Monday daily devotion by Pastor E. A. Adeboye - Worshipping the Unknown God?

Topic: Worshipping the Unknown God? [Monday February 23, 2015]

Memorise: Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. - John 4:22

Read: (Acts 17:16-23 KJV)

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

Bible in one year: Ezekiel 13-15, and Revelation 4

MESSAGE:

Apostle Paul was taking a walk through the old city of Athens as a visitor when he noticed an altar with this inscription: ' TO THE UNKNOWN GOD'. Paul was aware that Athens at that particular period was filled with philosophers of either epicurean beliefs or those of stoic principles. Epicureans were devoted to sensual pleasure. They have sensitive tastes, expecially in food and wine, and they loved to enjoy the good things of life. On the other hand, Stoics were professedly indifferent to pleasure or pain, free from passion, unmoved by Joy or grief and submissive to the natural law. These philosophers prided themselves as custodians of exceptional of wisdom and knowledge in all areas of life including issues about God and religion. When they met Apostle Paul, being persuaded of their superior wisdom, they were quick to ask "What will this babbler say?" However, their folly was already evident in this inscription. This story still rings true today. Because knowledge has greatly increased all over the world, scientists and philosophers proudly try to impose their limited mortal theories as superior to the knowledge of the Almighty God.

However, like the Athenians of Paul's days, these are genuine seekers among today's scientists and philosophers, who will readily accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour and submit to the authority of the Scriptures if the right opportunity is made available to them. The truth is: God is spiritual being. His existence cannot be investigated or proved scientifically; neither can He be searched out through philosophical investigations. Therefore, God can only be known by faith, through the revelation knowledge made available by the gospel of Jesus Christ (Luke 10:22). And more importantly, the whole Bible provides extremely convincing factual evidence that God exists and that Jesus Christ Is the son of the Living God (Colossians 1:15-17)

It is therefore time to expose the error of the unknown God and begin to propagate a more perfect knowledge of the Living God. We must use every available opportunity to reach the world with the message of gospel of Jesus Christ. It is the power of God unto salvation. It is the sure way to forgiveness, deliverance, healing, peace, joy and prosperity. Remember, time is short. Begin to vigorously propagate the gospel today, and great rewards will accrue to your account here on earth and in heaven in Jesus' Name.
